Adobe Photoshop Text Effects

In PRT-5460 Electronic Marketing, we work often with Adobe Photoshop and many other Adobe applications. One of our recent projects was to create four buttons that link you to different webpages throughout my Electronic Portfolio. This assignment was difficult at first because there wasn't much instruction given, so I had to wing it at first. Going into it blind definitely backfired because I didn't understand what Linda wanted us to do with these "text effects" and I think it is funny because Wix.com offers applications where you can create buttons on their website. So at first I created a gallery of the images. Then I changed the images' format and turned them into GIFs and made them transparent so that they looked more like three-dimensional text buttons.

I used many different layer styles such as outer glow, gradient overlay, drop shadows and color strokes. I like the transparent background because it makes the colors pop and they have a cleaner and simpler appearance. My favorite text effect was definitely the rainbow text effect with the gradient overlay and slight drop shadow. However the one that looks probably the most professional is the last one, photo gallery.

I enjoyed learning about Adobe Photoshop this semester, however my favorite projects were those where we had a little more freedom with what we could create. I created a photo of me swimming using layer masks and I thought that was the coolest project yet. However I could see where layer styling for text will come in handy someday, especially if you are wanting to make a professional header for a website or brand name.

If you need ideas on how to jazz up your text this website gives you 55 different text effects options. It also provides links to tutorials on how to make your text pop. After looking at this website I realized I could have gone all out on my project. But like I said above, the instructions were very vague so I wasn't really sure what was expected of me. Maybe in the future I can change my buttons on my portfolio and demonstrate my photoshop skills a little better.

Here on this image I used the layer styles of blending, stroke, gradient overlay, outer glow and drop shadow. I like the way this one looks because it looks like a neon sign that would be hung up at a bar or club of some sort.

This image is my favorite because I love rainbows and I just love all the color that is displayed. I used many different layer styles such as blending, strokes, gradient overlay and a heavy drop shadow.

Yikes! This is an example of my worst work. Not that I should be proud to post something ugly, I just wanted to show you that I explored different effects and made a lighter color on my outer glow instead of a dark color. Putting the dark color inside makes it looks blurry, which was intentional but its not the most appealing effect.

This is my most professional looking text effect. I like how I flipped the gradient so that it was going horizontal. It made the text look as though it was done separately but the shadowing says otherwise. I used gradient overlay and drop shadow to create this very simple effect.
