Facility Director Intern

 Goals & Objectives

Goal #1

I will be able to manage a youth sports league for SLC parks & Rec by the end of my internship.

•Objective A:

•Using sportsman software, I will develop the fall sports season rosters, and arrange 20 teams, and 8 scheduled games per age group, by September 12th, to the satisfaction of my supervisor.

•Objective B:

•By September 8th, I will develop a list of the top six preferred activities for the Tiny-tots sports program, indicated by the parents through the use of an agency interest survey.

Goal #2

I will increase participation in the Holladay Sea-Lions Pre-swim team program.

•Objective A:

•By restructuring the prep-swimming program, I aim to build our team from 6 members per class to at least 10 members per class by October 1st.

•Objective B:

•On September 6th, the first day of practice, I aim to improve at least 80% of my swimmer’s freestyle stroke techniques before the conclusion of that class. And I aim to reverse 75% of all their bad habits with thorough and proper instruction.

Goal #3

I will be able to coordinate any activities for an after school program with our partners at Wasatch Charter School.

•Objective A:

•I will schedule a meeting with the Principle and my supervisor by September 15th to discuss data and demographics.

•Objective B:

•I will assist my supervisor in realigning the budget and creating an “activity Lesson Plan”, as well as coordinating activities for each week by October 1st.

Goal #4

Learn how to manage the front desk by the end of my internship in April 2017.

Objective #1:

I will complete employee orientation and customer service training by February 28.

Objective #2:

Execute the ins and outs of all the office software especially Sportsman and OneNote. Be able to demonstrate how to create a new membership or manage a current one by March 15.

Goal #5

Move on from pre-swim team and begin to observe and manage all swim programming as of January 30.

Objective #1:

By February 1, I will create an organized schedule for the new pre-swim team instructors as well as a thorough handbook related to swim technique and progression drills.

Objective #2:

I will conduct the swim assessment at the end of the month to see how well their swimmers progressed, and I will lead the next swim instructor in-service at the end of February, to communicate where we can all improve.

Goal #6

Prepare a brochure, pamphlet and online flyer to better advertise National Water Safety Month

Objective #1:

I will create a brochure by March 1, a marketing tactic that targets our young patrons because we will eventually hand these out at schools and daycare centers, etc.

Objective #2:

I will create pamphlets and flyers regarding our spring and summer programs and events by March 1, for the front desk so that they can hand them out to patrons as they enter or exit the building. This will help with the organization of registering for our youth and senior programs.

Water Safety Month

•Made a program for Water Safety Day at Holladay Lions

•Made flyers and posters to hang up around facility to advertise safety

•Created bag tags with pool rules and pool essentials checklist

Lifeguard Job Flyer

I designed this flyer to advertise summer job openings for Crestwood Pool and Holladay Lions Fitness & Rec Center. This was great because I took it to the local schools and job fairs to speak about working for Salt Lake County. I began recruiting employees which became beneficial practice for my current job with Basin Recreation.

Why is this reform necessary?

The purpose of this swim reform is to help generate more revenue and increase our participation numbers. Through my observations I noticed that students were dropping out of the swim program after the "freestyle level in stroke school" or parents just assumed their child was ready for swim team when in reality their child was still afraid to put their face in the water. I also noticed this wasn't just the parent's fault it was the fault of the programming staff, swim instructors, and front desk personnel. I made an effort to help by teaching the pre-swim team class. In addition you will see that I worked really hard with my supervisor to create a swim program reform.

Revised Swim Program Mission Statement

I revised our swim program's mission statement because I wanted to emphasize our main goal of safety and efficiency to our clients. Many parents take the efficiency aspect of swimming for granted and sign their children up for levels they are not ready for. When this happens our swim instructors are working with students who are under more stress than those who are prepared. With that being said we made it our goal to make sure every swimmer is learning safety skills as well as proper swimming technique before they advance to the next level.  It is important for swimmer's to learn how to swim efficiently because efficient swimming preserves energy and preserving energy can be crucial if in a dangerous water situation.

Swim Program Before Reform

This is a diagram showing the old swim lesson progression. Students were taking Starfish swim school and then advancing into stroke school but would not properly complete stroke school before moving on to swim team. They would either drop out or move to swim team when they weren't ready therefore leading into development of bad habits which is in all honesty my biggest pet peeve.

Swim Program Reform Pryamid

This is a diagram of the new swim program reform. We kept a few things from the old program but we changed the progression up a bit. Instead of having stroke school we changed it to freestyle and backstroke. This gave the instructors the opportunity to refine the student's strokes before handing them off to me where I teach breaststroke, butterfly, and endurance. The purpose of this is to make sure every student is creating good habits and is getting the proper instruction they need before heading into the most advanced level. If they can safely and efficiently execute every stroke then they will do just fine swimming multiple yards in a swim team practice.

Swim Assessement Day

The purpose of the swim assessment day is to evaluate a student before registering them for swim lessons. Even if a parent thinks they know what is best for their child it is still a good idea to do the free assessment day to make sure their child is put in the right class. If a child is put in a class that is too advanced for them, it can create a lot of stress for the child and it can become a scary and stressful process for the child all the way down the road. If a parent wants their child to exceed, it's better to start out in a lower level than you think and let your child blatantly pass every benchmark to ensure he or she is ready and confident to move on.

Swim Instructor In-Service

I conducted a swim instructor in-service to ensure every instructor was on the same page. We went over a slew of things, but the most important was the swim lesson benchmarks. We discussed what each level's benchmark entailed and then we got in the water and went over each benchmark acting as the student and the instructor. The purpose of this exercise was to make sure the instructors saw what the benchmark should look like and what it should feel like. I also ran them through a mini stroke clinic, because I was appalled with how many swimmers I was receiving in class that didn't know how to swim freestyle properly so I made sure to re-teach all the instructors how to swim so that there was no confusion and that they knew what kind of expectations I had when passing a child through freestyle and backstroke.
